Winter without snow
December 28, midday. The sun sits low at this time of year at our latitude. There is no snow.
Two months of winter remain. What kind of winter will it be? Could a sudden cold spell without a protective snow cover damage the trees — or in the worst case, kill them?
A snowless winter is a tense situation for a fruit grower. The snow layer acts as a natural insulator, protecting the root system from severe frost. Without it, the soil freezes deeper and the roots are exposed directly to the cold.
We are monitoring the situation closely and hoping for snow before the harshest cold arrives.
